Environmental allergies occur when airborne irritants make contact with an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE), it triggers an allergic reaction. To determine which of these airborne irritants (allergens) are the source of the allergies, a skin test may be administered by a trained professional such as an allergist or immunologist.

Common Environmental Allergens Include:

  • Pet Dander
  • Dust
  • Pollen

In-Office Skin Test For Environmental Allergies:

A skin test can be a fast and affordable way for an allergist or immunologist to diagnose the source of your environmental allergies. Allergy Asthma & Immunology Institute conducts such tests in-office under the supervision of Dr. Ispas.

After discussing substances you encounter on a regular basis, what sort of environment you live and work in, and your allergy symptoms, one of three tests may be used to determine the best course of treatment. In a skin test, a diluted allergen is applied to your skin to determine whether it may be a source of your allergies. A skin prick test requires the allergen to be applies to the skin using a very small prick or puncture. In an intradermal test, a very small prick is used to apply the allergen slightly under the surface of the skin.

Allergic symptoms usually appear around 15 minutes after exposure to the allergen, but some symptoms may emerge later. Symptoms often appear as a red, itchy bump called a wheel or flare. The more noticeable the flare is, the more likely the severity of the allergy.

During your visit, we discuss all test results with you to determine the best course of treatment and how to proceed. Dr. Ispas will explain how to manage systems and avoid contact with allergens by removing them from your environments.

If you suffer from environmental allergies, give us a call. We’ll be happy to assist you in scheduling an appointment.
