Allergies happen as a result of the immune system overreacting when introduced to otherwise harmless substances (allergens) which the immune system perceives as a threat. Once contact is made, the immune system attempts to reduce the perceived threat. Contact with an allergen may occur through touch, inhalation, or oral consumption.
Allergy symptoms vary according to the type of allergy, the way in which the allergen is introduced, and the individual’s susceptibility to certain symptoms. Common allergy symptoms include:
A less common, but extremely important allergy symptom to be aware of is anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can cause difficulty breathing or swallowing, fainting, diarrhea and stomach pain, and more. It should be treated by a medical professional immediately and correctly as anaphylaxis may prove fatal. Many at risk of anaphylaxis carry an epinephrine injector to relieve symptoms until medical help arrives.
Because of the discomforts and dangers associated with allergic conditions, it is important that an allergist or immunologist properly diagnose the source of the problem so that reactions may be managed and/or avoided. The more you know about you or a loved one’s allergies, the better prepared you are to handle whatever situations may arise. Having a solid plan in place can prevent emergencies and even save lives, give greater peace of mind, and help achieve better health. Allergy testing is the first step in managing allergy symptoms and conditions.
Allergy testing should only be done under the supervision of a trained professional such as an allergist or immunologist. Because of the severity of some allergic reactions, this test must be administered very carefully in a controlled environment by a professional familiar with such procedures and the patient’s medical history.
